The head of the legal committee of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee (BHC), Harry Pahanyajla, believes that one can expect anything from the president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko. "He is a real threat. Lukashenko is afraid of any public expression of people's dissatisfaction, so one can expect anything from that person. Besides, we must remember that we are dealing with a sicky person," he said.

Lawyer recalled that the President himself stated that he’s ready to use the army to retain power. However, according to Harry Pahanyajla, the Constitution of Belarus guarantees citizens the right to hold peaceful demonstrations and meetings.

«It’s an inalienable right of all who disagree with the government to participate in those meetings. We hired a government to manage the economy, social sphere with the benefit, primarily, for the people. Therefore, when disgruntled people show their peaceful protest, they should not be dispersed by force. This is a direct violation not only of Belarusian laws, but also of those international obligations, signed by the country,» said the representative of the BHC.

As Telegraf previously reported, Alexander Lukashenko said during his visit to the agricultural enterprise «Ozeritsky-Agro» in Smalavichy district, Minsk voblast, that he wouldn’t stand any strikes and unsanctioned rallies in the country.

«Our «conversant» (Minsk opposition — Telegraf) in Minsk call for strikes in social networks, the Internet. I’m going to watch now, but then I’ll bang and show them all — they will hardly be able to flee across the border,» he said.
