Minsk's "Lenina Square" to Become "Independence Square"

In the capital, several streets and metro station "Lenina square" will be renamed. This decision was taken by the commission on naming and renaming avenues, streets, squares and other parts of Minsk. According to the decision, the metro station "Ploshchad Lenina" ("Lenina Square") will be named "Independence Square". 

According to the decision of the commission, there will be no Communalnaya waterfront, Liberation, Herzen, Dimitrova, Vitebsk and Revolutionary streets in Minsk. Their names will be the following: Trinity waterfront, Resurrection, Bernardine, Pyatnitskaya, Nyamiha-Rakovskaya and Koydanovskaya streets,respectively, reports «Belarus Partisan».

The Commission on the renaming of streets has also decided that the projected street «»within the boundaries of Odesskaya — Lazo — Ushakova — Kotovsky — Cheluskintsev streets will be given the name of one of the Belarusian partisan movement leaders during the Great Patriotic War, Victor Liventsev».

«The passage in the 11th block of «Raduzhnij» residential complex (low-rise buildings within the boundaries of Pioneer, Tikhaya streets and Tikhij lane) will be named as Solovjinij. And nameless passage near the bakery number 1 will be named as Yurevsko-Zavalny,» noted in the Commission’s decision.

Also, according to the Commission’s decision, the communal graves of victims of World War I, which territory has been guarded since 1998, will have a name «Minsk bed of honor cemetery 1914-1918», and nameless park in the borders of Koshevogo — Vaneeva streets — the building of «Vostochnij» («Eastern»)- bus station -channel of Slepyanskaya water system — building of BSEU, assigned a name of Persian and Tajik poet and scientist, Omar Khayyam.
