Lukashenko Reelected for a Fourth Term

Early in the morning of 20 December, the Chairman of the Central Election Commission of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina announced the preliminary results of voting at the presidential elections. According to the CEC, Alexander Lukashenko won the elections, — more than 5.1 million people (79.67%) voted for re-election of the incumbent president for a fourth time.

Lidia Yermoshina also reported that the electoral support of Alexander Lukashenko was slightly lower this year than at previous elections. 83% of voters were registered at a presidential re-election for a third term in 2006.

Alexander Lukashenko’s closest rival at the elections, according to the CEC, was Andrei Sannikov. 164 thousand voters (2.56%) supported him. Yaroslav Romanchuk (126.9 thousand people) got 1.97% of the votes, followed by Rygor Kastusiou (126.6 thousand of voters).

Vladimir Niakliaeu, according to the CEC, was supported by 113.7 thousand voters (1.77%), followed by Ales Michalevic — 65.5 thousand people (1.2%), Vital Rymasheuski —  70.4 thousand people (1.1%), Viktor Tereshchenko — 69 thousand (1.08%) and Nikolai Statkevich — 67 thousand (1.04%). Least of all votes (0.48%) were received by Dmitri Uss with 31 thousand Belarusians, voted for him. 6.47% of people voted against all the candidates.

Voter turnout at the polls at this election was 90.66% against 92.7% at the elections of 2006.
