Belarusians Sell Foreign Currency in Record Amounts, National Bank

The volume of foreign currency sales by individuals increased by $62.5 million and reached $603 million in Belarusian banks in August 2010. According to the National Bank of Belarus, it is the maximum rate since September 2008. Some experts believe that currency sales growth may be seasonal by nature.

In addition, the National Bank notes an increase in the currency volume buying by the public. The figure reached $610.3 million in August. Thus, the Belarusians bought $7.3 million more foreign currency than it was sold in August. However, the figure was $32.4 million in July, the newspaper «Belarusians and Market«.

Volume of currency sales in the domestic market of Belarus by business entities — residents of the country decreased to $1.3 billion in August compared to July this year. At the same time, residents bought $1.7 billion of currency during this period. Thus, residents purchased $409.6 million in its pure form in the domestic market, which is approximately two times higher than in July this year.

Business entities — non-residents of the country bought $123.3 million of currency in the domestic market of Belarus in August, and sold — at $113.8 million. The volume of foreign currency purchase and sale increased by approximately three times compared to the same period last year.
