Lukashenko explains what Putin wants – ‘I am now confident’
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, in an interview with the American television network Newsmax, explained what his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin currently wants in the context of the Ukrainian conflict. According to the head of the Belarusian state, Putin’s desires now coincide, at least in one aspect, with the desires of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
«I am now confident that Putin wants peace. I will not name the reasons. You know them well. These are both internal and external reasons. Zelenskyy wants the same thing. I am confident. Especially now. He wants peace,» Lukashenko stated.
At the same time, the politician acknowledged that the views of Ukrainians and Russians on how exactly the current war should end differ. In his opinion, the parties should proceed in this matter from the realities and results that exist today.
The continuation of military action, according to Lukashenko, could lead to everything escalating into a global conflict – with the use of «all the weapons that countries have.»
«Therefore, it must be extinguished while it is possible. Now, more than ever, there is such an opportunity, when the Americans have seriously engaged with this issue. This is your most important foreign policy issue. No Taiwan, other conflicts in the world, or problems can override this issue,» stated the Belarusian President, addressing the American journalist.
Lukashenko also predicted the complete disappearance of Ukraine as a state in the event of the continuation and escalation of the conflict with Russia.
«If Ukraine believes it can defeat Russia and is prepared to wage war, well, let it fight. From my point of view (and I think Trump holds this position), if the fighting continues like this, Ukraine will disappear from the map altogether, it will simply cease to exist,» stated the President of Belarus.
Previously, Telegraf.news reported that after a series of meetings with American and European partners, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on 16 December that a peace plan agreed with American representatives could be finally approved within a few days. After that, American envoys will present the document to the Kremlin.
