Belarusian sambo athletes permitted to compete under national flag
Belarusian sambo athletes will once again be able to compete at international events under their country’s national flag. This decision was taken on 4 December 2025 at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the International Sambo Federation (FIAS).
The FIAS press service stated that the federation made this decision, «guided by the fundamental principles of sport which affirm its neutrality, independence, and freedom from political influence,» in the interests of sport and athletes, and in a bid to ensure «fair and safe competition for all.»
As early as October this year, FIAS permitted athletes from Belarus and Russia to compete under their national flags and with their national anthems at international junior and youth competitions. From 1 January 2026, this has been extended to athletes of all age categories at all international competitions held under the auspices of FIAS.
Commenting on the decision, FIAS President Vasily Shestakov expressed the view that «sport must remain outside of politics.»
«Sport is a bridge for dialogue and mutual understanding between peoples, even in difficult times. We continued this course, first by returning national symbols for juniors, and now – for all athletes. This decision returns the situation to the legal framework, based on equal rights for all members of our federation,» stated Shestakov.
Previously, Telegraf.news reported that this week, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) sided with the Belarusian Ski Union and overturned a ruling by the Council of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS), which had barred Belarusian skiers from participating in qualification for the 2026 Olympic Games, even under a neutral status. Details of the legal proceedings were reported on 2 December by the Belarusian National Olympic Committee.
