Belarus is considering creating new military forces, potentially including cyber troops, focused on artificial intelligence, the country’s top security official said on Friday, following President Alexander Lukashenko’s call to address emerging security threats.

Secretary of State of Belarus’ Security Council Alexander Volfovich stated that Lukashenko plans to hold a closed meeting dedicated to artificial intelligence issues.

«Everything related to artificial intelligence needs to be elevated to a new level, discussed, and accordingly, decisions need to be made. Such decisions will be made in Belarus as well,» Volfovich said. «It has been proposed to the President to hold a meeting in the near future. Possibly a closed meeting. Or to dedicate a separate Security Council meeting specifically to artificial intelligence development issues.»

He added that following discussions, Belarus might establish «a new branch of troops, for example, cyber troops or other structures within the state’s military organization.»

«The President supported this idea. We will begin preparing for this meeting in the first quarter of next year,» Volfovich clarified.

This announcement follows Lukashenko’s recent address to the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), where he identified artificial intelligence, unmanned aerial vehicles, and cyberterrorism among key threats requiring collective attention from member states.
