Belarusian Athletes Readmitted to Global Competition in One More Sport
Belarusian athletes have been readmitted to international competition in another sport. The country’s membership was officially reinstated this month byThe World Climbing Executive Board.
As announced by the The World Climbing press service, the decision was taken at the federation’s latest executive board meeting, held in Turin, Italy, on 10 and 11 February.
The membership of the Belarusian and Russian national federations was suspended in March 2022. Now, athletes from the two countries have been cleared to compete once more in international events held under the organisation’s auspices. However, certain restrictions remain in place for both Russia and Belarus:
- Athletes holding Russian and Belarusian passports are permitted to compete in international events only as neutrals (i.e. without displaying state symbols, national flags or anthems).
- Holding international-level competitions within Belarus and Russia remains prohibited until further notice.
As a result, Belarusian athletes now have the opportunity to qualify for the next Olympic Games, scheduled for 2028 in Los Angeles, USA.
