Former Speaker of the Supreme Council of Belarus, Stanislav Shushkevich, believes that if Belarus was legal state, as it was according to the constitution till 1996, it would be in a better position than under the current president, Alexander Lukashenko. "Many people say that Lukashenko's policy has brought stability, but such stability is kept by the fear", Stanislav Shushkevich declared.

«And if there is a collapse, then we will have to endure the shock and transition period to normal economy. And this is maximum effort mainly through old powers», Belarusian service of Deutsche Welle quotes the leader of Belarusian Social-Democratic Party (Hramada).

Speaking of the positive and negative impacts of Alexander Lukashenko’s governing, former speaker of the Supreme Council of Belarus drew attention to that the industry and agriculture in the country were developing using old methods, there was no economy liberalization, the number of loans and total debt of the country had increased.

«Despite an evident revival of Belarusian economy and the country as a whole, it is not commensurate with the revival of Lithuania or Poland», Stanislav Shushkevich said.

If in 1994, events developed according to other scenario, if Belarus became «normal jural state, as it had been originally announced, the country would be in much better position than under the current ruler», the politician said.

«I think the initial period would be more difficult for the country, because to transfer to fundamentally new course in economy, to fundamentally different basis in tax case — it always means a deterioration of the situation. We had such situation at first, but we intended to overcome difficulties following the example of Poland, that is, to pass a state of shock. Lukashenko, in general, helped the country to get rid of this shock, but did not get rid of reforming», Stanislav Shushkevich expressed his opinion.
